70% PVDF formulated with Kynar 500®

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a fluoropolymer resin that when combined with the hardness of acrylic delivers a durable, high-performing coating system that withstands the test of weather and time. Kynar 500® or Hylar® 5000S based PVDF resins are the preferred choice of coating formulators thanks to their high resistance to extended UV exposure. Providing superior durability, color stability and stain resistance compared with SMP, premium PVDF finishes provide improved performance against water, humidity and high temperatures, oxygen and other atmospheric pollutants. Decades of testing demonstrate that PVDF offers peak performance when it makes up 70% of the overall metal panel coating. When comparing PVDF finishes, beware of less expensive formulations that contain only 50% PVDF, as performance drops off considerably. EMF proudly offers only premium 70% PVDF coatings formulated with Kynar 500® resins in dozens of premium and metallic colors. Custom colors are also available.

WeatherXL™ (SMP)

Silicone Modified Polyesters (SMP) coatings use a blend of polyester and silicon intermediates and offer a more economical option compared with PVDF. Long-lasting polyesters offer durability, particularly in the resistance to UV degradation and polymerized silicone improves gloss retention and reduces fading due to chalking. SMP coatings offer a harder finish making them more resistant to rough handling; however, this also makes them less flexible than other coatings which can lead to tiny fractures during roll-forming of panels. SMP finishes vary greatly in quality with the most important difference being pigment type. Extreme Metal uses WeatherXL™ SMP coatings from Sherwin Williams®  formulated using ceramic and inorganic pigments. Ceramic pigments, similar to those used in PVDF coatings, offer superior color stability, chalk and fade resistance, and better gloss retention over other SMP coatings.
